Chronology of cameras Contax
Contax, originally owned by Yashica, became the property of Kyocera after the acquisition of the former Japanese brand by a group specializing in ceramics and electronic components. For marketing or prestige reasons, Kyocera continued to feature both the Yashica (now Kyocera-Yashica) and Contax brands on their cameras for several years, adding a small Kyocera logo in a corner. On this model, there isn't even a Kyocera logo visible, but there exists a similar, less luxurious Kyocera SL300R model. Towards the end of its photographic activity, Kyocera removed the Yashica brand from its cameras, emphasizing the group's name instead. Although there is likely no direct cause-effect relationship, this occurred just before Kyocera definitively withdrew from the photography market. In 2005, the Kyocera-Yashica subsidiary closed without further continuation.
The SL 300 R is a flat, rectangular camera composed of two parts that rotate relative to each other along a horizontal axis. The smaller part supports the lens and flash, while the other part contains the viewfinder screen, controls, and buttons. The top surface is covered in a handsome textured leather.
This model is not only aesthetically pleasing but also efficient. It powers on quickly and captures photos rapidly. Saving to the memory card is nearly instantaneous.
You can take photos with the two parts aligned or at right angles to each other, which affects only the handling.
The lens features anti-reflection treatment indicated by the T*. It is not stabilized. The results obtained are good, especially for a camera of this type. However, there is no lens protection, so be cautious of fingerprints!
